Supporting Attorneys. Supporting Clients. Supporting Families.

Trauma-informed psychological and supportive services for immigration, trafficking, and other trauma-related legal matters.

Immigration cases often involve much more than legal documentation. Clients may be navigating trauma, family separation, displacement, exploitation, fear, and significant uncertainty about their future.

At Monica Kristen Therapy, I provide trauma-informed mental health and support services that complement the work of attorneys and legal professionals. My goal is to help clients feel understood and supported while providing clinically appropriate services that can contribute meaningfully to their legal and personal goals.

My experience includes working directly alongside attorneys and paralegals in an anti-trafficking legal-services setting, supporting survivors of human trafficking with immigration matters, psychological evaluations, social-service needs, and long-term family reunification.

Services for Attorneys

Immigration Psychological Evaluations

I provide trauma-informed psychological evaluations for immigration matters where a client’s psychological history, trauma, or mental health may be relevant to their case. Evaluations provide an independent clinical assessment that can help communicate the psychological dimensions of a client’s experiences within the broader legal matter.

Consular Processing & Family Reunification Support

I provide individualized, trauma-informed guidance and concierge support to families navigating the consular processing process toward reunification. Support may include navigating English-language forms and online systems, organizing documentation, preparing for appointments, and helping families understand the practical steps involved.

Support for Survivors of Human Trafficking & Interpersonal Violence

My experience includes working with survivors of human trafficking and other forms of interpersonal violence, particularly immigrant survivors navigating complex legal and social-service systems. I provide trauma-informed supportive services, needs assessments, referrals, coordination with community providers, and assistance navigating resources related to victimization including accessing funds through the Victims of Crime and Compensation Office (VCCO).

Education, Training & Consultation

I provide trauma-informed education and consultation for attorneys, legal organizations, healthcare providers, mental health professionals, community organizations, and other professionals working with survivors and immigrant communities. Training topics may include human trafficking, trauma-informed care, self-care, and responding to the needs of vulnerable populations.

A Clinician Who Understands the Legal Context.

My work sits at the intersection of trauma, immigration, human trafficking, mental health, and legal advocacy.

My experience includes working directly with survivors of trafficking in a legal-services environment alongside attorneys and paralegals. In that setting, I have provided psychosocial support, coordinated community resources, conducted immigration psychological evaluations, and supported clients through complex and often lengthy immigration and family-reunification processes.

This experience allows me to understand both the clinical needs of clients and the realities of working within a legal-services environment.

I understand that attorneys are often supporting clients whose needs extend beyond the legal matter itself. My goal is to provide thoughtful, trauma-informed services that complement the legal work already being done.

A Trauma-Informed Approach

I understand that attorneys need mental-health professionals who communicate clearly, respect professional boundaries, and understand the demands of legal timelines.

With appropriate client authorization, I can collaborate with attorneys regarding evaluation questions, relevant clinical information, timelines, documentation needs, referrals, and coordination of client support.

I view the attorney-clinician relationship as collaborative but distinct. Attorneys provide legal advice and representation; I provide clinical assessment and supportive services within my professional scope.

Clients involved in immigration and trafficking-related legal matters may be asked to recount deeply personal experiences multiple times.

A trauma-informed approach recognizes that this process itself can be difficult.

I strive to create an environment where clients can discuss their experiences without feeling pressured, judged, or defined solely by what happened to them. I also recognize that trauma can affect emotional regulation, communication, relationships, memory, and day-to-day functioning.

My approach emphasizes:

 Safety
Creating a supportive environment in which clients can engage at a pace that respects their needs.

Respect & Autonomy
Recognizing that clients are the experts on their own experiences and maintaining their ability to make informed choices.

Cultural Responsiveness
Considering culture, immigration experiences, family systems, language, and community context.

Collaboration
Working with attorneys, providers, and advocates,  while maintaining clear professional boundaries.

Empowerment
Helping clients recognize their strengths and develop the tools they need to move forward.

A Final Note About Legal Services

Monica Kristen Therapy does not provide legal advice or legal representation. Psychological evaluations and support services are provided independently and are intended to complement, not replace, the work of an immigration attorney or other legal professional. Attorneys remain responsible for legal advice regarding eligibility, strategy, filings, and legal deadlines.
