Trauma can affect much more than the way we remember what happened. It can influence how we feel, think, connect with others, and move through everyday life.
You may feel anxious or overwhelmed. You may find yourself avoiding certain situations, struggling to trust, feeling disconnected, or simply trying to keep going while carrying experiences that still affect you.
At Monica Kristen Therapy, trauma-specific therapy provides a supportive space to understand what you’ve experienced, build effective coping skills, and work toward healing at your own pace.
You don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin.
My approach is grounded in the belief that therapy should feel safe, healing, and empowering to own your experiences and choices. I utilize a trauma-informed structure.
Trauma-informed care emphasizes:
Your experiences are unique, so therapy will be tailored to you and your needs.
Heal from the past. Move forward with confidence.
EMDR is an evidence-based trauma therapy that can help people process distressing experiences and memories that continue to affect their lives.
It may be helpful for trauma and PTSD, childhood trauma, interpersonal violence, human trafficking, anxiety, grief, medical trauma, and other distressing experiences.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
TF-CBT is an evidence-based approach that uses trauma-sensitive cognitive behavioral strategies to help individuals understand and cope with the effects of traumatic experiences. This model incorporates simultaneous guardian healing as well.
For both guardian and child, therapy may focus on emotional regulation, coping skills, understanding trauma responses, and developing healthier ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions.
A flexible, individualized approach to healing.
Trauma-focused therapy doesn’t have to follow a single structure. Depending on your experiences, needs, and goals, therapy may incorporate approaches such as CBT, ACT, DBT, narrative therapy, attachment-focused work, acceptance-based techniques, and supportive talk therapy.
Therapy can be especially meaningful when trauma intersects with major life transitions, including pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum experiences, divorce, job changes, or significant loss. For some, this may include processing a difficult or unexpected experience, navigating anxiety or depression, or making space for grief and adjustment.
Sessions may be structured and goal-oriented, or they may unfold more organically based on what feels most helpful to you. Together, we can focus on developing safety and coping skills, identifying and desensitizing from your triggers, understanding how past experiences continue to affect you, processing difficult experiences, and building greater self-awareness and connection.
Your experiences are unique, and your therapy should be, too.
Trauma-focused therapy may provide support with:
You don’t have to identify with a particular diagnosis or label to seek support.
Healing doesn’t necessarily mean forgetting what happened.
It can mean developing a greater understanding of your experiences, learning ways to regulate difficult emotions, reconnecting with your strengths, and having more choice in how you move forward.
You can start exactly where you are.
